A weekly basket that resets

Writing a new shopping list every week is easy, and so is copying out the same items week after week without noticing. It works, but it throws away the one thing in a list worth keeping: the order you already know.

The idea

One standing list for the household. At the end of a shopping trip you mark what you bought and the list resets: what is done drops off, the structure stays. Next week you start not from a blank page but from a skeleton that already works.

Why it is better

  • The order stays. If you arranged it by dish or by the route through the shop, that is kept.
  • Nothing falls through. An item the shop was out of last week is still there.
  • The history becomes useful. You can see what keeps coming back, and that is exactly what drives the monthly bill.

How to start one

Begin with one ordinary shop. At the end, mark instead of deleting. Next time, add only what has changed. After three or four rounds the list will describe your household fairly well, and each week you will only be adding two or three things.

Then comes the part that pays. A fixed, known basket is exactly what is worth comparing prices on, because the saving comes back every week.

Common questions

What happens to items that were not bought when a new round starts?

They stay on the list. A new round clears what was done, not what is still needed.

Can I keep several lists?

You can, but for household shopping one is usually better. With several lists, something always falls between them.
